Role of the Library

The Irwindale Public Library provides convenient access to information resources for educational opportunites, lifelong learning, informational needs and leisure pursuits.

Location & Directions

The Irwindale Public Library is located on the south side of the City complex which is at 5050 N. Irwindale Avenue, two blocks south of Arrow Highway. Turn east on to Calle de Paseo and enter the second parking lot from Irwindale Avenue. The handicapped rails lead from the parking lot to the front door of the library.

Fees

Extended Use Fees are charged when library material is returned late. The fee on adult items is 25 cents per day; on children's items is 15 cents per day; on DVDs is $1.00 per day.

Photocopies are made for you by staff for 10 cents per sheet. Pages printed from the Internet are ten cents a sheet for black and white and 25 cents per sheet for color.

Borrowing Privileges

Library cards are issued to members residents of the City of Irwindale and the members of the libraries of the Southern California Library Cooperative and the members of the Los Angeles County Library upon presentation of proof of membership in one of the libraries and a current California Driver's License or a California Identification Card. If neither of these are available, a valid picture identification and valid proof of residence is required. Proof of residence could be a current utility bill in your name.

Books and audio-books can be borrowed for three weeks. Overdue fees are 15 cents per day for children and 25 cents per day for adults. DVDs can be borrowed for one week and overdue fees for both adults and children are $1.00 per day per item.

Programs

Tiny Tots
This storytime and craft session is held every other Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. from September to May for members of the City of Irwindale Recreation Department Tiny Tots Program and any other preschool children who may enjoy it. Please call the library at (626) 430-2229 for the current schedule.

After School Storytime
The After School Storytime is held every Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. starting in September and continuing until the end of May.

Summer Reading Program
The Summer Reading Program is offered to assist children in maintaining their readings skills during the summer. The Irwindale City Council, the Irwindale Public Library, the Irwindale Chamber of Commerce and various businesses in and around the City partner to provide both financial support for the program and reading incentives for the children to encourage them to achieve. Children who are members of the Irwindale Public Library may participate. Storytimes, craft times and performances are scheduled during the program. 2010 Summer Reading Program donors

Pick-A-Book Reading Program
This program is for children ages four through eighteen and usually runs from January into March. Each child reads five books and chooses one of the books to illustrate. The picture the child draws is displayed in the library for about six months. Once the drawing is presented to staff, the child chooses a brand new book to keep from the bin.

Homebound Program
This program is offered to the homebound residents of Irwindale. Through a partnership between the Irwindale Public Library and the Irwindale Senior Center library items are delivered to residents over 50. Homebound children and adults under 50 receive their deliveries from Library staff. Books and DVDs are delivered every three weeks to members of the program. Items can be renewed by phone. Please call the Library for more information.

InterLibrary Loan Program
The Interlibrary Loan program enables the Irwindale Public Library to borrow books for patrons from other libraries through the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System. At the moment, there is no charge for this program although that is subject to change.

The Irwindale Public Library has an after school Learning Center for the resident children of Irwindale. The Learning Center is staffed by teachers from local schools under contract to the City of Irwindale and volunteers who enjoy working with children.
Monday and Wednesday from 3 p.m. till 6 p.m. the elementary school students are scheduled. Middle and High School students are served on Tuesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. till 6 p.m.
We have a special program for the children who may be failing a grade. Please see the City Librarian for more detailed information on the program.
